Performance Directions
“Whirlwind” is an energetic and lively etude, designed to enhance the development of crucial piano techniques. The composition prominently features contrary motion, where the hands move in opposite directions, challenging the pianist to maintain precision and balance between the hands. Conveying the desired dramatic intensity of the piece requires proficiency in the execution of strict tempo control (in 5/8 time). The piece’s thematic material and dynamics frequently shift between the right and left hands, requiring the pianist to demonstrate a high level of hand independence. Further technical challenges include gradual changes in dynamics, observing articulations and performing consecutive octaves and rapid leaps.
Mastery of these technical aspects will enable the expressive character of the composition to be more fully realised and will help to develop the performer’s overall technical proficiency.
Program Note
"Whirlwind" is an exciting and animated etude that explores the dynamic possibilities of contrary motion. Throughout much of the piece, the hands move in opposite directions in an irregular 5/8 rhythm, creating a stirring feeling of perpetual motion and energy. The piece features simple yet grand dramatic themes reminiscent of the resonant tolling of cathedral bells, adding a layer of intensity and grandeur to the work. In addition, the repetitive, rapid, cyclical nature of the composition evokes imagery of a whirlwind's swirling force, which was the inspiration for the title.
